"The more you fail, the more you succeed. It is only when everything is lost and - instead of giving up - you go on, that you experience the momentary prospect of some slight progress. Suddenly you have the feeling - be it an illusion or not - that something new has opened up."
In 2000, my favorite teacher at Davis loaned me a book called "A Giacometti Portrait" - it documented the artist Giacometti, painting a portrait of the book's author over several weeks. It was a painful process and because of that, a frustrating read. Regardless, I was fascinated and kept the book...not really on purpose, but maybe sort of. I've always felt bad for not returning it.
